The County of North Yorkshire is the largest County in the country covering an area of 5,500 Square Miles, much of it remote rural locations. This makes the provision of some medical services particularly challenging, particularly those services which are ordinarily provided via central based hospital locations; one of these services is the delivery of Ophthalmic Screening Services relating to Diabetes. The Health Trust therefore provides mobile screening services delivered at local GP Surgeries and Health Centres, negating the need for patients to make often long and complicated journeys to the Trust’s six main hospitals.
The screening of patients includes an examination using an Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Imaging System or camera which in normal use would be mounted on an examination table or worktop. The Trust needed Camera (see below) to be safely transported in a specially adapted van around the county and on reaching the surgery where the clinic was being held removed from the van to the building and then transported around the inside of the surgery. Once in the clinic the camera needed to be mounted on a height adjustable stand ready to use.
Gary Tremble Craven’s Design Manager visited the Trust and spent a significant amount of time understanding the requirements of the Mobile Ophthalmic Screening Team and the problems that they faced in transporting the OCT camera around the County, the following problems were identified:
The camera needed to be very secure when mounted on the trolley, they cost £45,000 each.
In effect the Trust need a mobile, height Adjustable Mobile Stand holding the camera to navigate the inside of the Surgeries as well as a robust Trolley to Transport the Mobile Stand to and from the van. Craven needed to design a trolley within a trolley.
Both trolleys would need to be light enough to be easily manoeuvrable in both external locations with rough and uneven surfaces and within the clinic.
The valuable camera needed to be safe.
The Trolley needed to be able to be easily loaded and unloaded into the specially adapted vans.
The Trust staff needed to be confident in use of the trolleys.
Gary decided the prime issue was the security of the camera when mounted on the mobile stand so the Trust arranged for him to be provided with a camera to take exact measurements, he designed the plate on which the camera could be securely mounted.
From this foundation Gary designed the stand with an electrically controlled actuator column based on a four way castor base which allowed the camera to be manoeuvred around the surgeries and be set to the required height for each patient.
Next came the external transport trolley to get the camera on and off the van as well as transporting it from the van to the surgery, Gary was also able to include a lockable cabinet for the Ophthalmic Teams other equipment.
The finished product can be seen below prior to being delivered to the Trust, and they now have six of these in use throughout North Yorkshire.
As your Father no doubt told you “you can’t get a quart in a pint glass”, in actual fact both of Craven’s main sectors of operation, Catering and Medical want exactly that in terms of their storage requirements. Businesses and Organisations quickly out grow their premises and this often leads to storage issues.
Traditionally shelving has been set out in parallel lines of bays or in an L or U shape around the walls of a room which (if the customer has the space) is ideal and leaves plenty of room for staff to access the contents of the shelves and move from one location to another.
The Craven High Density Firmatrack makes optimum use of available space, it is available as either a manual or mechanical System and in a nutshell mounts our shelving on a pair of tracks which means that the user has unrestricted access to the stored items only when they need to retrieve stocked items.

The Room Layout Drawing shows the same room with the 4 tier shelving laid out in a traditional best fit format and a Firmatrack layout. The traditional layout provides a usable storage area of 32 sq. m whilst the Firmatrack Layout provides a usable storage area of over 52 sq m, an improvement of over 60%.
