Decode London Limited are a leading design agency in East London, specializing in bringing the best industrial designs to market. Decode’s aim has always been to collaborate with up-and-coming designers and create a collection with a unified look and feel that celebrates modern British design and champions British manufacturing.
One of Decodes London’s popular products is the wire light. The light consists of a bulb and pendant suspended within a “shade” constructed from various wire forms. The wire profiles are arranged in such a way to create the illusion of a twisted inner core at the centre of Wire Light. These concentric loops produce two layers: the inner layer that interrupts and softens light emanating from the lamp, and the outer layer, that defines its decorative form.
Cravens were approached by Decode to determine the viability of manufacture and to prototype. Although the design was already fixed we had to realise an efficient method of manufacturing to deliver a very high quality specification at a cost effective price.
Gary Tremble (Craven & Co.’s Technical Manager) and Tony Recchia (Production Supervisor) developed some concepts on different solutions to be able to produce the wire forms on one of the CNC machines and then a jigging method to allow the wireforms to be held whilst they were welded into place and also to be able to be removed from the jig as a completed assembly. These concepts were considered with the production team that would ultimately be responsible for the production and a preferred solution established. From here a detailed design was developed, this was checked by the production team to ensure “usability” and the jig manufactured.
Using this consultative process enabled Craven & Co. to achieve the brief set by Decode and a high quality cost effective product. Further details on decode can be found here www.decode.london.
